About Satark and Ashvin

What is Satark Journeys?

Satark Journeys designs private, tailor-made journeys through India, Nepal, Bhutan and Tanzania for travellers from the USA and Europe. Each one is researched, scouted and personally escorted by the person who designed it, Ashvin Kumar Mishra, who has guided across India since 2012. What does “Satark” mean?

Satark means conscious and purposeful in Sanskrit. It is how we try to travel: with attention, and for a reason. We take care of every logistic so that attention is all you need to bring. It is also how we hope you will remember India: not as a list of places seen, but as people met and things understood.

Who is Ashvin?

Ashvin Kumar Mishra is our Founder and Chief Travel Curator, and “Ash” to his guests. He began leading market tours and village walks in Mumbai in 2012 and has since guided travellers the length of India. He speaks English and Hindi fluently, and Marathi conversationally. He is equally at home with a maharaja and a village weaver, meeting each as an equal, which is what opens India’s doors for our guests. Ashvin leads many journeys himself and is on the road about fifteen days a month. Where he cannot be, a hand-picked escort travels with you throughout; either way you will have met him first, on your free call, and he stays in touch before and during the trip. Which journeys do you offer?

The journeys on our website are starting points, never fixed tours: Holi in Braj and Rajasthan, Diwali in an Indian family home, the textile weavers of Gujarat and Rajasthan, the White Rann of Kutch under a full moon, the Himalayan Hermit, Planet Ladakh, Nagaland’s Hornbill Festival, the Eastern Gem, October Full Moon in Jodhpur, and Indriya, India in six senses. Do you go beyond India?

Yes: Nepal, Bhutan, and Tanzania with Zanzibar, either as a journey of their own or as an extension to India. In Tanzania we have led guests through the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire, and spent time with Maasai, Hadzabe and Datoga communities. For anywhere else, ask Ashvin; he will tell you honestly whether it is a place we can design well.

Can you plan around a festival?

Yes, and it is one of our favourite ways to travel. We time journeys to festivals, full moons and each region’s best season, and check every date against official sources rather than memory. Holi is played in the streets of Braj with host families; Diwali is celebrated inside an Indian family home; Hornbill is every December in Nagaland. Because festivals draw heavy planning, we suggest six to twelve months ahead.

Do you do wildlife and the Himalaya?

Yes. India has more than 55 tiger reserves, and our journeys reach Ranthambore for tigers, leopard country in the Aravalli hills and Kaziranga for rhinos at dawn. We can also design towards Gir’s Asiatic lions or the snow leopard country of Ladakh and Spiti in the right season, though no sighting is ever promised. In the high Himalaya the pacing is built around altitude, with rest days and acclimatisation, so the mountains are a pleasure and not a test.

Can we meet artisans and see craft?

Every Satark itinerary includes time with textile, embroidery or handicraft makers, and guests meet them as friends, not as an audience. In Delwara, more than 250 women artisans of the Sadhna cooperative teach appliqué and block printing, then sit down with guests for tea. Guests buy directly from the maker, so the money goes to the hands that made the thing.

How long should we plan for?

Fourteen to eighteen days is the least we suggest for a true taste of India; our signature journeys run in that range, and the full range is seven to twenty-six days. We would rather do fewer places over more days, with rest days marked, than rush you through a checklist. If you only have ten days, say so; a shorter journey can be beautiful if it is focused.

When is the best time to go?

It depends on where. Rajasthan and Gujarat shine from autumn to early spring; the Himalaya from April to September; Ladakh from June to September; the Northeast in spring, with Hornbill every December. Festivals and the moon set their own dates. Tell us what you most want to see, and we will fit the season to the journey, not the other way round.

Can the journey be customised?

Customising is the whole idea. Every journey is designed from a blank page around your interests, pace and preferences; the ones on our website are only starting points, and lengths are flexible. Do you take solo travellers, families and groups?

Yes to all, always privately: solo travellers, couples, families, friends and small groups, typically two to eight guests. There are no group departures with strangers and no coach tours. For a larger party, speak to Ashvin first; it changes how we design the journey.

How far ahead should we plan?

Most of our guests plan six to twelve months ahead, because the best stays are small and festivals and seasons fix their own dates. If your dates are closer than that, tell Ashvin; he will say honestly what is possible rather than promise it.

What does a journey include?

Every journey is looked after end to end: a dedicated travel manager, airport assistance, a private vehicle with a trusted driver, heritage and boutique stays chosen for character, local experts hired for each place, and Ashvin or a hand-picked escort throughout. What exactly is covered in your own journey is set out with you, so ask about anything specific, such as flights, and Ashvin will answer plainly.

What about deposits and cancellation?

Our terms are set out in writing in your proposal, and Ashvin walks you through them on the call, so you have them before you commit to anything. If a worry about changing plans is holding you back, please say so; it is a good question, and better asked early.

Safety and comfort

Is India safe to visit?

That is a fair question, and the answer is a calm yes, with the same good sense you would bring anywhere. What makes the difference on a Satark journey is how it is built: it is private, never a group; you are escorted the whole way by Ashvin or a hand-picked escort; you travel in a dedicated vehicle with a trusted driver whose hours are capped; every route has been walked and tested; and our support runs around the clock. One guest wrote of Ashvin’s “genuine caring for my safety and needs” (Liis Kangsepp, Estonia). Beyond that, India’s oldest idea of a guest is Atithi Devo Bhava, “the guest is God”, and an open mind and an open heart are most of what it asks of you. I am travelling solo, or as a woman. What will it be like?

Solo travellers are welcome, and a private, escorted journey means you are never finding your way alone: someone who knows the place is always with you, and the vehicle, driver and stays are chosen with you in mind. What about health, food and water?

We choose where you eat and stay with care, from heritage hotels to a family’s own kitchen, and Ashvin will brief you on what to expect and how to look after yourself. For vaccinations and personal health advice, please see your doctor or a travel-health clinic before you go; that is guidance only a clinician who knows you can give.

I am worried about altitude in Ladakh or Spiti.

The pacing is designed for it, so the mountains are a pleasure rather than a test. In Ladakh there are three acclimatisation nights in Leh, with rest days marked, and every vehicle carries oxygen. Drivers’ hours are capped and support is around the clock. If you have a heart, lung or blood-pressure condition, please speak with your doctor and with Ashvin before we plan anything at height.

Can you accommodate limited mobility or older travellers?

Often, yes, and honestly so. Pace is flexible, rest days are built in, and every activity is a suggestion, not an obligation. Some places, such as old forts, stepwells and the high Himalaya, involve steps or altitude, and Ashvin will be candid about what suits you and what does not, designing around it or recommending something else. What if something goes wrong while we are travelling?

You are never on your own. A dedicated travel manager and Ashvin or your escort are reachable throughout, and support runs 24 hours a day. No hotel is changed without your approval. We also recommend good travel insurance, which Ashvin can talk through with you.

Do you cater to vegetarians, allergies and special diets?

Please tell Ashvin on your call, or in your enquiry, and we plan around it with hotels and hosts in advance. India is one of the easiest places in the world to eat well as a vegetarian, and we are glad to design your meals, including the ones in family homes, around what you eat.

Culture and regenerative travel

What about the poverty and the contrasts we hear about?

India is vivid, and you will see all of it: palaces and village lanes, wealth and hardship, calm and noise. We do not hide any of it and we do not dress it up. What changes the experience is having someone beside you who explains what you are seeing and why, and who introduces people as people. How should we dress and behave?

India is forgiving of curious visitors, and Ashvin briefs you before you go and guides you in the moment, whether it is a temple, a home or a market. In general, dress modestly for religious places and expect to remove your shoes. What is regenerative travel?

Regenerative travel leaves a place better than you found it. Where does our money actually go?

To the people who make the journey possible: homestay hosts, artisan cooperatives, local guides and drivers, herders and farmers, conservation projects, and heritage hotels that keep old buildings alive. Not every journey includes a village homestay, but every journey supports the village. In Kutch, for example, Ajrakh printers, Rabari embroiderers and copper-bell makers are paid directly.

Will we meet real people, or just see the sights?

You will meet people; that is the point. Chai in a Rajasthani home, lunch cooked by Bishnoi women in their own kitchen, Holi with host families in Braj. Most visitors need a visa, and the rules depend on your passport and change from time to time, so please check the official Government of India visa website or your nearest Indian mission. Do we need to speak Hindi?
