October Full Moon
Folk music under the brightest moon of the year, in a fort the size of a city.
Begin a conversationView the routeOnce a year, the brightest full moon in north India rises over Mehrangarh Fort
The royal family of Jodhpur times the Rajasthan International Folk Festival to Sharad Purnima, the brightest full moon of the year. For five nights, the musicians of the desert play inside Mehrangarh Fort. There are dawn concerts on the ramparts and moonrise concerts in the courtyards. Mick Jagger is the festival's international patron, and UNESCO calls it a people's platform for creativity.
We build the days before the festival around the Rajasthan most visitors miss. There are quiet villages with palaces for our residence, a fifteenth-century Jain temple of 1,444 carved pillars, leopard country in the Aravalli hills, and a dinner by lamplight in a historic stepwell. The journey ends where the music comes from: in the Thar Desert, under the same moon.
