The Story

The Himalaya at the pace of the people who live there

Stay long enough in a Himalayan valley and it starts to reveal itself: mist lifting off the Parvati river, tea in a wooden house in Tosh, the bells of Naggar's pagoda temples at dusk. Himalayan Hermit is built for that kind of time. Drives are short, afternoons are free, and each valley gets the days it deserves.

The route follows the Beas from the hot springs of the Parvati valley to the orchards of Naggar and the old village of Manali, then crosses to the Kangra valley: the monasteries and paragliding ridges of Bir, and Dharamshala, home of the Tibetan world in exile. For travellers who want to go higher, the High Road extension crosses the Atal Tunnel into Lahaul, to a glacial lake, the quiet village of Jispa and the Zanskar road beneath the great rock of Gonbo Rangjon.

Ashvin has guided travellers through Kangra, Parvati and Lahaul himself. That means a Tibetan artisan's studio, a shepherd's trail and a Lahauli kitchen, alongside the places everyone comes to see.

Good to Know

Questions guests ask us

QHow do I get there?
Fly from Delhi to Kullu to begin in the Parvati valley, and fly home from Dharamshala. Mountain flights depend on the weather, so we always keep a road plan ready.
QHow fit do I need to be?
The core journey needs only an easy walking pace. The Bhrigu Lake trek on the extension is a full day of uphill walking; ponies and a shorter route are available.
QWill I feel the altitude?
The core journey stays between about 1,500 and 2,400 m. The extension climbs gradually above 3,000 m, with rest days built in, and we ask every guest to speak to their doctor first.
QCan we meet His Holiness the Dalai Lama?
When His Holiness is in residence, we can request an audience on your behalf. It depends entirely on his schedule and the approval of his Office, so it is never guaranteed.
QWhat about the monsoon?
The monsoon reaches the Kullu and Kangra valleys from July to mid-September. Lahaul lies in the rain shadow, which is why the High Road is at its best in summer.
QIs there Wi-Fi?
In the hotels of the core journey, yes. On the High Road, connections are patchy, which most guests come to love.
